End of the First Week

November 16, 2008 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

My first week at MicroMain.  The place has a great atmosphere and the people working there enjoy being part of the team and involved in the process of providing a product that is making a difference to businesses.  I was able to sit on two days of training.  There were two companies that had brought a couple of people to the training.  It was a good experience for me to see how actual customers react to the software.  I am also getting pretty comfortable with the code.  I think I am going to be ready this week fixing some of the features that need updating.  Another thing I am really looking forward to is I can work four ten hour days.

Another cool that is happening this week is that I found a gym that is about 500 yards from my office they open at 5:30am  Which means I can get in at least 1.5 hours of work out in before work.  I have a week pass for free.  I am hoping I can trade them for a year pass.  I was able to swim on Friday with the masters swim group.  We swam about 2300 for the workout.  I was also able to get a couple of 20 minute runs in and about an hour on Saturday.  I haven’t done much exercise since I was in Texas before.

I have done some listening to music this week.  My wife had me listen to the new Plain White t’s song 1,2,3,4 its got some of the most clever lyrics ever.

There’s only one thing two do three words four you.  I love you.
There’s only one way two say those three words and that’s what I’ll do, I love you.  I love you.

Italics added for emphasis

Another song my wife got me listening to is Blue October’s Calling You.  Both are pretty good songs to dedicate to a lover.  Especially if you are apart.

Why is it so late everyday when I finally get to bed.

I am slacking on the posts

With me getting a job in Austin I really haven’t put much effort into writing.  I have been trying to figure out how to get to and from work.  And while at work I am learning the new software.  The company has a very relaxed atmosphere and great people.  The owners are right in there helping move the company along.  The software I am now helping to develop is a maintenance management software.  Their three biggest verticles are state and local governments, healthcare facilities and schools.  The company has been around since 1991.  I sat in on training for two clients the past couple of days.  It was fun to see how much the clients like and use the software.

Austin just has a magic about it.  Unlike most of Texas Austin has hilly terain.  This morning it was foggy, to me, it felt and looked like driving along the coast in Northern California.  People in general like living here and always have good things to say about their city.

Working the Election

October 25, 2008 by D. Gardner 1 Comment

I have been working with Washington County Clerks office this week on the elections.  There have been almost 7000 people take advantage of the early voting here in Washington county.  It’s cool to see everyone voting.  The majority of people are senior citizens.  We all need to get out and vote.  While I believe the we can’t effect the presidential campaign here in Utah.  We do have a say on our local politicitans and for us that is the most important.
