10 minutes a day – Adventures in Driving my EV to Park City.

June 2, 2014 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

I read some advice that suggested one of the things I might try each day is writing for 10 minutes.   They said just to let it flow.

The last couple of nights Kate has been waking up a couple of times a night, I think because she is growing and hungry.  It has been difficult for me because I have been getting to bed later than I should and then we I am awakened it is difficult to go back to sleep.  Saturday into Sunday morning was bad.  Kate woke up sometime after 1:30 and by 3:00 am I still wasn’t asleep so I took a couple of ibuprofen for my head ache.  After 30 minutes I still had a headache so I thought I would take a shot at driving to Park city.  I’ve always been affaid to make the attempt because it’s mostly uphill.   I had let me car get a full charge and so I headed up.  I was surprised to see my car, a Nissan Leaf,  made it all the way to Park city with only draining half a charge.  I was pushing the car and I went over the speed limit a couple of times.  I really was not try to conserve any electricity going up. Once arriving on the main street in Park City,  I then reset my miles per Kilowatt hour meter and started down.  I didn’t realize how much I had heated up the battery, because the two hills I charged up on the way back really drained my battery and kept my average to 7.7 by the time I arrived home.  I will try the drive again, but I am going to let the car rest a bit before coming back down.

It was fun to see th potential distance for a full charge at 117 the next morning.

Driving the Leaf Up Hills

October 9, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Last week end we drove up Big and Little Cottonwood canyons with the leaf, while listening to the second session of General Conference.  We also drove up the canyons to check out the leaves.

My goal was to see how the leaf did up the hills and how much it would recharge going down the hills.   Up the first canyon we  were down to about 25 miles and 40% battery when we turned around.  by the time we got to the bottom were up to 47 miles and 50% battery.  It’s pretty cool that just going downhill can give the car more juice.

The second canyon we were down to 13 miles and 32% on the battery.  At the bottom we were at 42 mile and 40% on the battery.

Another cool effect was the next morning on a full charge it said it would go 116 miles.  It’s never been that high before.

The next uphill drive is going to be up to Park City.  We’ll see how that goes 😉

Racing the Corvette

August 15, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Last night on my way home.  I was stop at a light right next to a corvette.  I thought I’ll give this a try.  So when the light turned green I put the pedal all the way down.  The corvette tried to keep up and finally passed me when we were doing about 55.  Two lights later it was red again and I pulled up next to him.  He had the top down.  I pulled up along side him and said,  “I’m driving an electric car I just wanted to test it out.”  He said back, “I was surprised you kept hanging in there.  You’ve got a lot of torque.”  I smiled and turned the corner.Yellow Corvette

Two Months and more than 2500 miles

August 1, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

I thought I would be posting all kinds of crazy stuff about my new car.  Well I haven’t and that pretty much means I am not going to be famous or anything like that.  However, I have found that I really like my car.  It’s fun to drive and fun to listen to the music.  I almost feels like I am playing a video game when I am driving the car.  I am always trying to get my score higher.  I have gotten lazy the last couple of weeks because I have been driving to work faster than the car says is good.  But if I drive slow and get a sick energy saving score and grow a bunch of trees on my dash board.  Or I drive like fast and get there in half the time and only grow half a tree.  The energy used is still the same.   Most of the problem with my energy use is the hill at the point of the mountain.  I am surprised at how much that sucks from my battery going and coming home from work.  It’s still a ton of fun.

Oh yea I am missing the RUSH concert tonight.  Those guys where starting to get old when I was in college 20 years ago.  O well, I should probably try and see them.  Anyway off to bed.

New Car – It’s Electric

June 10, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

It all started the early last week when I read an article from the Wall street journal A Price of Nearly $0  I think that was on Tuesday.  I am spending nearly $200 on gas each month, mostly to commute to work.   I started thinking if I sell my car and use that money for a down payment.  Then I can use the gas money  to pay for the car.  from what I understand the electricity will only cost me about $25 a month.   As part of the article they also mentioned that Nissan was giving free rental car days for the long trips.  I normall rent a car when I am headed out of town so it was another thing that was going to save me some money

On Wednesday I sent a message to the dealership to find out more about the deal, and started corresponding with a sales guy there.  I also mentioned my idea to Roman, my 17 year old son.  Fast forward to Thursday night, Roman had already posted photos of our car on KSL classified, Friday morning He had five people interested in our old car.

So after work on Friday I headed to the dealership for a test drive.  I was surprised how fast the car was. So move along to Saturday, three people with cash in hand wanted the car.  After some craziness we got what we were asking for the old car and we headed over to the Dealership, Tim Dahle Nissan on 45th and State.  It took a couple of hours, then they found my new leaf somewhere and had it delivered to the dealership on Tuesday. Because I was without a car for a day they rented me a Nissan xterra.  It was fun for a day.   So I got to pick up my car on Tuesday after work.

I have some video that I will post here when I get that edited.
