LDS Career Workshop

September 22, 2009 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

This past weekend I spent about 6 hours at a career workshop.  With a couple of friends.  I picked up a couple of new things from the workshop.  The first is that I need to come up with a better.  “Elevator Speech”  Here is what I have come up with:

I am a business consultant with over 15 years of successful leadership experience.  I am successful because I can fix problems and motivate employees.  With my skills I have been able to raise profits and increase employee productivity.  I am passionate about learning something new everyday.  Because of this I have been able to identify and adopt emerging technologies.  This has help me to better manage risk and design innovative solutions to problems

We also learned about power statements. I need to work on more. I am creating a google document with more of the power statements. But here is one for an example.

I can work hard and smart. for example I was given the responsibility of turning an office around that was missing deadlines. I worked 12 hour days to design and implement a system that paid people more to produce more. Within two months were were beating our deadlines by two hours. and the average production for each employee had doubled.

I will continue to work on more of these statements.

Trying to get some Focus

August 19, 2009 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Over the past couple of days I have reflected about topics I want to right about.  I just realized I need to put those things into my categories list so when I want to look at what I have written I can just select the category.  I have also been playing around with twitter for the last couple of days to see what that is all about.  My fear with twitter is that it may just be a fad and It is also becoming a very crowded social network.  I have a personal twitter and a twitter for my business dmgsouth and on other one to play with so I don’t hurt my other two.  I have found a couple tools that can automate a few things, but it still seems like most of it is just going to require time  and work.  I found a post about the seven deadly sins of blogging from copyblogger #2 is Sloth. here is a small quote

The 1,000th time I heard a client say, “But that sounds like a lot of work,” my brain exploded

it was a great article while it is about blogging I think it applies to the twitter. It is just going to take some work.

While I believe twitter can be a good tool now. It is more about getting people to notice you and not much about a real message. I had decided sometime ago to have two blogs a personal blog and a professional blog. This is my personal blog and may never, and sometimes I hope that is the case, that no one ever reads this blog. Mostly this is just for me. to work through stuff. On my professional blog I will give information that I think people can use for there businesses.

The thing I think I am going to focus on primarily for the next couple of years is the web development and secondarily I will focus on the Motivational Pay. With the ultimate goal to become a full time consultant for the Pay for Performance

Start writing a book

August 14, 2009 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

I read some advice today that suggested people start writing a book.  Get up an hour earlier every morning it suggested and write a page.  After a year you will have 365 pages, if you miss a few days you will have at least a 200 to 300 page book.  I also communicated with brother Mike about it.  He said he a documentary class that suggested you write about anything for 20 to 30 minutes a day.  He said it got a lot easier to write by doing that.  So this is the first of many random posts that may help me direct my focus on what to write about.

I thought about writing about my experiences with skimboarding.  Over the past couple of years I have also thought about the story, or screen play for a science fiction story.  Then there is the book I would also like to write about motivational compensation, getting employees to act like owners, motivating correct principles.  I could also write a small book on music.  As sit hear thinking freely about what to write I think about being a scout master and working with youth and boy scouts.  Maybe I should write a book about how cool my wife is.  I could write a book about how cool my kids are too.

last night I was talking to mike about a book or maybe it was  pod cast he was listening to about business.  It talked about people getting into business and hitting a lull, the lull between beginning and real accomplishment.  He also talked about sometime the lull is really just a cul-de-sac that you may be in and not realize you are going around and around not getting anywhere while it is draining your resources and will to live. He also talk about falling off a cliff and that some businesses just fall off a cliff for one reason or another.  However at the end of the conversation Mike talked about years ago, in High School, where an olympic athlete had spoken to a couple of our friends.  He told them being an olympian is in your genes.  No matter how hard you try you can’t be an olympian, it has to be in your genes.  Mike tied this to his pod cast and the cul-de-sac theory.  The author indicated we all need to find that one thing we can be the best at, The one thing that genetically we were gifted with to be the best, the best in the world.  That is what we all need to find.

I have though about a concept like this for awhile.  There are many things I a pretty good at, but I always wanted to find something I am the best at, and with all the superhero movies, the one thing that I feel is my superpower.  I was asked that one time on a resume.  “What is your superpower” I put down, without much thinking “helping people.”  I think my cryptonite is ego, “I want people to think I am cool.”  I have this inner struggle about wanting to anonymously help people and then on the other hand be well know for my helping people.  That is quite the paradox.  However at this point I prefer the anonymity.  My wish is that I could have tons of money and just spend all my time helping people without them, or anyone else knowing.

Well it looks as though I am nearing my first writing session  I will list, for myself the book adventures I may pursue.

Skim boarding
Science Fiction
Motivational Pay
Wife, Kids
Super Power.

I will pick up tomorrow and see where it leads me.
