2019-11-20 Radical Candor and 1 Million Followers

November 20, 2019 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

I started listening to Radical Candor. The lady that wrote the book has worked for some famous people and loves to name drop. I like some of her ideas and sadly my desire to have respect from my peers and from people encourages me to follow her advice

John Keller has changed the focus of marketing at work. So I am listening to 1 million followers in hopes I get more insight into how to market in the social media world and basically in the world of marketing in general. The main focus of the book so far is the use of facebook to test ideas and then put more money and attention to those things that best engage the audience. The focus is really on experimentation.

I am also struggling with the idea of how to get my family to see the benefits of waking up early every morning. I struggle with this myself because I cannot point to my life and say that waking up early has brought what I would call success.

2019-11-18 – Riding and Keystone habits

November 18, 2019 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

So on Friday, I rode my bike to work and back again. It was a bit warmer. but only slightly in the morning. 42 f (6c). I left a little bit after 7 and so it was light for my whole ride to work. My feet and hands were a little cold but nothing to worry about. I showered at the vasa and I was glad to see they had a bike rack that I could lock my bike to. By 9:30 AM it was warm enough when I left Vasa that I didn’t put my sweat pants on and left my hoodie unzipped on my easy ride to work. Even in that last mile, I was still sweating a little for a while after I arrived at work.

On the way home I got a thorn in my front tire and had to change it on Frontrunner on my way to the Murray station. There was a nice gentleman named Kendrick on the train, probably 19 or 20 that let me borrow his pump to pump up my spare. I didn’t check the tire for thorns until I got home so I had punctured my replacement tire. I spent about 3 hours trying to fix one of the tires. The sub-standard patches I had in my possession were not working so after 4 iterations of attempting to install different patches pump them up to do a test ride and then watch the tire go flat in about 5 minutes. I was frustrated with the situation so I decided to go to a bike store to get replacement tubes and better patches. I purchased a thorn resistant tube it was about twice what I wanted to spend, and then I got a regularly priced tube as a backup and small patch kit. I was ready to go on Monday.

I was planning on riding this morning but with Kate’s birthday I just ended up driving. I am feeling the withdrawals for not exercising at all this morning. I need to be more disciplined on Sunday night and plan better for Monday mornings so I do my exercise instead of finding other things to do.

At work this morning we finished discussing the book Atomic Habit by James Clear. Not included in the book were 8 keystone habits talked about in Charles Duhig’s book The Power of Habit.

Here are 8 Keystone habits

  1. Eat dinner with your family
  2. Make your bed
  3. Exercise Regularly (I’m going for 5 times a week. Power, Cardio, Balance)
  4. Track what you eat (
  5. Journal – (Gratitude Journal – Life Focus)
  6. Develop daily routine (Morning and Nightly Ritual )
    1. Plan for next day – What will be the focus
  7. Meditate
  8. Strengthen willpower

2019-11-15 Backlinks and Biking

November 15, 2019 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

We are switching tactics focus at work from LinkedIn outreach to Backlink collection. Because of this, I have to figure out how to get backlinks for REDLIST

Another thing I am experimenting with in my life is riding a bicycle to work. I will have to ride to the Frontrunner station and take that to American Fork and then ride from there. Yesterday I gave it a bit of a test run. I rode to the station and then back to my house. In total it took about 40 minutes.

I am trying it the whole way today. We’ll have to see how it works out. I took some clothes to work so I wouldn’t have to carry everything. However, I forgot to leave shoes there so I am going to have to take some shoes with me because I cannot wear my biking shoes around all day. Maybe I’ll just take some flipflops.

Yesterday the temperature was 37f ( 2c) today it’s 42f (6c)

2019-11-08 Death of Money

November 8, 2019 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

This was an interesting book that could have been shortened down to only a few pages.

There were some interesting concepts that I hadn’t considered.

First, was the central banks and governments use inflation to take money and wealth from the population.

Second, is about Gold. I have always thought that because gold doesn’t serve much purpose and everyone views it as money. However, I now see that gold will probably always be seen as money in that fact its function is money and all things go up and down based on what gold is. I am going to work on buying gold and have it as part of my asset portfolio

I also have a new idea about bitcoin because it has the effect of moving the power of money away from central banks and government to people. This has a huge potential to change the world.

2019-11-06 Making Myself Sick

November 7, 2019 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Sunday was fast Sunday and I ate too much Halloween candy and it gave me some really bad pains that started about 2:30 AM Monday morning. I took 5 doses of Pepto Bismal and that didn’t seem to help. between the pain and lack of sleep, I stayed home and slept.

That sort of thing puts me behind and then my new attempt to journal suffers.

One of the things that prompted me to eat more candy than I should is: we are starting a health challenge at work that we can get paid for if we complete. One of the things in the challenge is I have to accumulate 10 days a month with less than 20 grams of added sugar. Being irrational I am thinking I can game the system and eat a bunch one day. I paid the price for the poor food intake management.

I like also that the health challenge requires 10 days of 30 minutes of exercise. That one will be easy for me. I was able to run for 30 minutes yesterday on a treadmill. I’ve run for longer on the road, however, it still felt good. I swam for 30 minutes today.

While swimming Travis Stock joined me in the pool. I haven’t seen or talked to him since April. It was good to see him there.
