Changing of the Guard: Les Miserables style

Last night we went to a Les Mis concert that was recorded at the London Theater and then replayed in theaters. It was very good and I would recommend it to almost anyone

About 20 years ago I was visiting England for work and went to London over the weekend. I just happened to be walking by the Queen Theather were Les Mis was playing and asked the box office if there were any tickets. I was fortunate there were and I was able to watch it.

It was a great musical and I was touched by the powerful story. I have watched several Les Mis concerts in the past. The 10th Anniversary and the 25th Anniversary. Both were very good but lacked the power and I didn’t experience all of the emotion of the revolving stage version I saw live.

We found out last night that the production is moving to the theater next door and loosing the revolving stage, which further online research, revealed has been public since last spring.

It makes me want to schedule a trip for me and Amanda to London to see the new version. I wonder if the new version is not successful they will go back to the revolving stage.

It makes me wonder if there has been less interest in the last several years or if they were afraid there was going to be less interest. It has been running for 33 years.

I also wish I would have understood that the touring groups were not the revolving stage. I also didn’t realize it had been running this whole time was happening and taken Amanda there before the original was not playing. However,

Worth the Wrestle

Talk Given 12/29/2016 at BYU Idaho

Sister Dew also has a book by this same name and I listened to it over the last couple of days.

Like the talk above the main premise of the book is that we all need to work harder to receive our own revelation and inspiration in our lives.

She states that we need to keep to the commandments and then work/wrestle to gain the power of revelation in our lives.

It’s interesting I am reading this book now because I believe and for some time that I need to work harder to get better at revelation in my life

I have always wanted to be better at getting my own revelation. However, this intent was renewed during Russell M. Nelson’s Sunday first conference President of the Church in April of 2018.

One of the quotes that stood out for me from him in his talk was actually from Neil L Maxwell.

“To those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, it is clear that the Father and the Son are giving away the secrets of the universe!”

Neal A. Maxwell, “Meek and Lowly” (Brigham Young University devotional, Oct. 21, 1986) speeches.byu.edu.

I love that idea and have been pursuing it ever since. I still feel I have a long way to go.

She states that one of the apostles said to covet the gift of prophecy or revelation. I did a quick scan to see if I could the reference. However, I have not been able to find it yet.

Study of the Barges

December 9, 2019 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Over the last month or so I have been paying attention to the story of the Brother of Jared and the barges.

This is the way I interpret the story and how it relates to my life.

First The brother of Jared is given instructions on how to build the barges. (Ether 2) However, after he gets them built he realizes there may need to be some modifications. First, they need to be able to breathe and second, what are they going to do for light.

He brings these issues to the Lord. The Lord gives him the answer to the air problem right away. He says, put a hole in the top and in the bottom.

Then he tells him you can’t have windows and then asks him what do you suggest? Leaving the problem solving up to the brother of Jared.

I know in my life I would like the Lord to give me all of the answers. But I know and I have also learned through many things that this is not the best way.

I like the insight the talk from October 2019 general conference gives. (Elder Budge). In the talk, it asks the question, “Do you feel like the Lord has left you darkness?” And then Elder Budge reminds us we need to ask to receive these blessings.

As I read the story I realized they have put the pattern for how I might ask for the blessings I want. (Ether 3). I should acknowledge my unworthiness, the Lord’s hand in my life, his mercy to me and my family, the constant need for me to repent, and then to ask for what I need.

I am going to test this pattern out more diligently.

An addiction I have formed over the last couple of years is the need to find new ways too look a the world. I think the best author for that is Malcolm Gladwell. I have read several of his books over the years. The Tipping Point, What the Dog Saw and Goliath.

Someone recommended to me his podcast – Revisionist History – I’ve started at the beginning and listened to three episodes so far. I have not been disappointed.

Every episode has not disappointed and I have come away seeing a different perspective on the world. I am also hoping I will change my behavior for the better with these different perspectives. I am looking forward to more episodes.
