I am slacking on the posts

With me getting a job in Austin I really haven’t put much effort into writing.  I have been trying to figure out how to get to and from work.  And while at work I am learning the new software.  The company has a very relaxed atmosphere and great people.  The owners are right in there helping move the company along.  The software I am now helping to develop is a maintenance management software.  Their three biggest verticles are state and local governments, healthcare facilities and schools.  The company has been around since 1991.  I sat in on training for two clients the past couple of days.  It was fun to see how much the clients like and use the software.

Austin just has a magic about it.  Unlike most of Texas Austin has hilly terain.  This morning it was foggy, to me, it felt and looked like driving along the coast in Northern California.  People in general like living here and always have good things to say about their city.

Working the Election

October 25, 2008 by D. Gardner 1 Comment

I have been working with Washington County Clerks office this week on the elections.  There have been almost 7000 people take advantage of the early voting here in Washington county.  It’s cool to see everyone voting.  The majority of people are senior citizens.  We all need to get out and vote.  While I believe the we can’t effect the presidential campaign here in Utah.  We do have a say on our local politicitans and for us that is the most important.

Nine Days

October 20, 2008 by D. Gardner 1 Comment

I can’t believe it’s been nine days since I last logged in a wrote something.  I have been pretty busy working on websites following up on leads and job interviews.

One thing that is on the minds of many is the economy.  I have spoken with several business owners, small businesses with just a few employees and they are concerned.   I am not sure the economy is as bad as Obama and McCain would like us to believe.  Many companies are taking a “wait and see” approach.

This I believe is more dangerous than people see.  Because now who ever, or what ever business,  makes a hard push forward they will be so much ahead of the “wait and see” crowd.  There is a guy here in St. George that everytime he hears people start to talk recession he pulls out his piggy bank and starts expanding.  He own’s an Ace Hardware store.  He was the only hardware store in St. George at one time.  One of his friends pointed this out to me about 15 years ago, just as we were going into the recession in the early nineties.  Then again right after the dot com collapse he was expanding again.  But when the economy was going gang busters his store was unchanged.  Well again we are heading into some rough times and you guessed it his store is a mess and there is a bunch of expanding going on.  I never thought he would survive.  He has to compete with a Lowes, Home Depot and two super Wal-Marts.

When the economy is good he is waiting and seeing.  And as soon as things start to head south he is jumping in and moving forward.  While everyone else is “Waiting and Seeing.”

Another good example of this is the story of Joseph in the Bible.  He saw that during the years of plenty they should save.  Then during the years of famine they opened up their stores and sold, gaining a huge advantage over the rest of the world.

I need to pay more attention to these things.

Bragging up my Kids

October 11, 2008 by D. Gardner 1 Comment

While I believe all parents are proud of their kids I would like to say a couple of things about my kids today.

My daughter scored 3 goals today in her soccer game. She’s scored multiple goals in games before, but today a girl stepped on her foot and a her shoe came off, but that didn’t stop my daughter. She kept going around the girl and scored.

While they are young this is a competitive league where the team was setup and the girls were chosen because of their skill.

My oldest son is currently playing football. On defense he plays saftey. Unfortunately, because of my job search I haven’t been able to see him play in a game.

He also played soccer for 3 years. The thing I like to brag up about him is the last year he played, in a championship game, he scored two goals in that game; one with the right foot and the other with the left foot.

our Youngest is smart, I will post a couple of the lego vehicles he builds. I may even set up a blog just to show his vehicles. He’s only five, and while they aren’t elaborate they are clever. He’s much more advanced in his lego building skills than his older brother and sister were at that age.

I’ll write more later about my kids.
