Nature Has It’s Way of Showing off

September 23, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Over the last couple of weeks or so I have noticed this flower blossoming on the side of the freeway.  I kept thinking to myself I have to take a picture of that flower.  So I did.  I think this is natures way of showing off and saying,   “No matter how big and powerful you think you are you can’t contain me. I will show you my strength through little bits of beauty in the most unlikely places. I will survive! I will conquer!”

What I learned

September 18, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

I am not surprised it’s been 10 days from the last time I found some time to write.  I have been writing to Roman and I have been finding other things more important.

A couple of weeks ago I attended a discussion with the missionaries.  At one point a fellow asked the missionaries what they should be teaching.   Elder Smith, he is from the San Francisco area, he turned right to 3 Nephi Chapter 11 He said the best thing to do is to follow the example of Christ.  About verse 21 Jesus starts teaching by giving the power to baptize, then he tells them the only way to be saved is to be baptized.  So when the Savior of the world show up and starts teaching;   He starts out with “Be baptized.”  I think we all need to be so bold.  I am 43, I’ve spent most of my life studying the gospel and I am just now realizing that if I am going to follow the example of Jesus, I need start out with baptism as what to start teaching.

Sooo Many Commercials

Over the last two weeks as the start of the American football season has started.  I and my neighbor, both of us have daughters playing soccer, and we are watching a game or two a week of soccer.  We have noticed how long American football takes.  We are used to watching games where there are only commercials during the Half.  The rest of the game is all action.

I completely understand the lust for advertising revenue that television stations need the revenue.  American football seems to be the perfect scenario for advertisers.  However, with DVRs I believe ad effectiveness is going down.  I know I don’t watch any of them.  I do however notice the electonic and painted advertising throughout the game on the sidelines of the soccer game.

I am just happy we get to see as much soccer as we do in the US now.  I wonder if I would have been able to watch a bunch of soccer when I was younger I would have wanted to play more.

The Body Is An Amazing Piece of Machinery

August 23, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Last Ditch Effort. The last couple of days I have been trying to practice golf for a tournament this weekend with my church.  After a couple of days hitting range balls, with out a glove, I am starting to get blisters on my thumb, forefinger and my palm.  I finally bought a glove to stop the damage.  I went home and iced my wounds.  I thought it would take a week or so to overcome my injuries.  I was amazed at how well they healed the next day.

The human body is truly amazing.  It is marvelous that people believed life, and these amazing human bodies, happened as a result of several million years of genetic accidents.  Over the past 100 year the human race has made some technological progress.  However, nothing we have yet created even comes close to the marvelous workings of the human body.  People praise the new technologies like the idols of old.  Sadly one day we will all stand at the judgement bar of God and we will with shame admit that all thing do testify of a God that created this magnificent world and all the organisms that occupy this space.  I think the most devote of the follows will feel shame at how much they thought they knew as they lived here on earth.

I look forward to the day that I understand all of the science and technology that makes the universe spin.  At that day it will probably seem as simple as I know think 2×2=4 is now.  The day of understanding with be magnificent

Every Now And Again I Realize How Fast Life Is Moving

August 20, 2013 by D. Gardner Leave a Comment

Roman, is headed to the MTC this week.  I remember vividly going into the MTC.  That was over 25 years ago.  Looking back, it’s a blur  I remember Roman being born.  How does it all happen so fast.   The next 25 years will probably go faster.  It’s too redundant to even talk about the speed.  There are some wonderful memories, some exhilarating emotions and devastating lows.   We all stand here surviving, hopefully better and stronger than we were 25 years ago.

Roman really has been prepared to be a missionary, or anything frankly, where he is going to be on his own.  He is a very capable person.  He still makes unwise choices.  But it won’t be long before he sheds those little things.  There are many men that are much older than Roman, that may never reach his level of maturity and skill.  Luckily I get to be the proud father.  I am always looking forward to his next thing he will do.
